The Secularism Officer's role

The University of Strasbourg is a public institution. This means that it must be neutral and secular – it cannot favour or promote any religion or belief. Therefore, staff must not express their personal beliefs at work or let them influence their decisions. At the same time, the principles of secularism and neutrality protect everyone's right to think freely, believe or not believe (freedom of conscience) and ensure all members of the university community are treated fairly.

The Secularism Officer helps staff and students understand and apply these principles.

When to contact the Secularism Officer

You can contact the Secularism Officer if you have questions about secularism or neutrality at the university. This might include questions about:

  • Wearing religious symbols
  • Not taking part in an activity for religious reasons
  • Holding a meeting for a religious group on campus

The Secularism Officer offers advice and support to everyone in the university community and always maintains confidentiality.
