What is the Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility (DD&RS) award?

The Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility award (label Développement durable et responsabilité sociétale – DD&RS) recognises French higher education and research institutions that actively promote sustainability and social responsibility.

This award covers all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is structured around five key areas defined in the DD&RS framework:

  1. Strategy and governance: establishing a clear vision and an effective structure to drive the DD&RS strategy
  2. Teaching and education: integrating sustainable development principles into programmes and teaching methods
  3. Research and Innovation: promoting research and innovation that support sustainable development
  4. Environment: reducing the institution’s environmental impact and encouraging eco-responsible practices
  5. Social policy: supporting social well-being and tackling inequalities within the institution

How is the University of Strasbourg putting the DD&RS award into practice?

The University of Strasbourg has structured its DD&RS initiative around:

  • A dedicated Vice-Presidency and Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility Office
  • A network of dedicated coordinators in services, faculties, schools, institutes and laboratories

The University of Strasbourg has adopted several strategic documents to guide its DD&RS initiative:

  • A sustainable development and social responsibility strategy
  • A resource efficiency plan
  • A carbon footprint assessment and a low-carbon transition plan
  • A Sustainable Development and Social and Environmental Responsibility Road Map (schéma directeur Développement durable & responsabilité sociétale et environnementale – SDDDRS)
  • A “Science in Society” action plan, including science outreach activities with the Jardin des sciences
  • An action plan for gender equality in the workplace

This strategy has led to a number of concrete initiatives, including:

  • Training students in environmental and social issues across all undergraduate programmes
  • Developing an analysis framework that enables each research unit to assess its eco-responsible commitment and track progress over time
  • Appointing an energy and resource efficiency officer to support departments in monitoring consumption and implementing energy performance strategies and actions
  • Organising the start-of-year “Sustainable and Inclusive Campus” event (Campus solidaire et durable)
