What is participatory research and science?

Participatory research and participatory science bring together scientists and non-scientists to take part in scientific projects.

Participatory research is based on close collaboration between researchers and the general public to jointly produce and develop knowledge. By combining scientific expertise with people’s experiences and insights, it helps ensure that research addresses the issues that matter to society.

Participatory science mainly involves members of the public helping to collect and analyse data as part of scientific research projects.

Both approaches enrich research by drawing on people’s experiences, skills and curiosity, and by exploring issues that matter to them.

What is the Labo citoyen?

An initiative of Open University of Strasbourg (OPUS), the Labo citoyen supports people and organisations inside and outside academia in developing participatory research and science projects.

Fund and incubate a project

The Labo citoyen supports participatory research and science projects through a call for expressions of interest. The aim of this call is to encourage the development of projects that bring researchers and members of the public together, whether as part of an established or informal group, or through associations, institutions, businesses and other organisations.

Get involved in participatory research whilst studying

As part of the Open University of Strasbourg (OPUS), the Labo citoyen gives students the opportunity to take part in participatory research projects developed with people working in the field. Their position at the intersection of science and society makes their involvement particularly valuable in strengthening ties between the university and the surrounding region.

Taking part allows students to:

  • Complement their academic studies with hands-on experience that combines professional skills and research
  • Develop a reflective and collaborative approach, contributing to open and participatory science

Train in participatory research

As a resource centre dedicated to participatory research, the Labo citoyen offers events, training and a toolkit to support those involved in participatory research. These practical resources help build skills, support projects and encourage collaboration.
