The University of Strasbourg leaves the social network X - ex twitter

Thèmes[Presse] Vie de l'université

The University of Strasbourg has decided to leave the X social network. This decision has been motivated by the evolution of this network: lack of respect for the European code of good conduct, paid certification, proliferation of false information and conspiracy. The university is committed to the dissemination of reliable information and respect for public debate, and invites its subscribers to follow its news on its other social networks.

The University of Strasbourg has decided to leave X at the start of the new year. Before completely deleting its @unistra account, it will leave it visible until the end of February. The aim is to invite its subscribers to join its other social networks, and to give time for accounts affiliated with the university to migrate to other platforms.

Some universities have already left X and others are considering it (Université de Bordeaux, Université d'Aix-Marseille, Université Rennes 2...). The University of Strasbourg has decided not to wait, but to participate in this necessary social awakening, especially as it is already present on other platforms.

There were several reasons for this important decision:

  • network X no longer complies with European standards of good conduct on social networks;
  • paid certification has been introduced, suggesting that payment is equivalent to reliability of information;
  • researchers studying these platforms have demonstrated the noxious turn taken by their owners, leading to a rise in conspiracy theorists and the proliferation of false information, thus playing on public opinion and against the ethics essential to public debate.

The University of Strasbourg, which throughout its history has been committed to the dissemination of reliable information, critical thinking and respect for the values of integrity, diversity and humanism, is assuming its responsibilities by reaffirming the importance of communication channels useful to public debate in a spirit of openness and respect for exchanges.
