The breakdown of dead organic material, such as plant litter, is a central process for carbon, nutrient and energy spiralling in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems In aquatic ecosystems organic matter breakdown is driven by substrate properties, aquatic microorganisms (mainly bacteria and fungi) and invertebrate detritivores (including cryptic lineages)
Increasing evidence suggests that chemical stressors can affect this process in multiple ways, for instance, by modifying the feedbacks within the leaf associated microbial community ultimately translating to changes in leaf litter decomposition but also the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels
