The goal of this course is to help students understand the challenges of composing and editing in plain language. Based on the principals of audience, purpose, and design, students will learn to assess writing needs based on a variety of different contexts. More specifically, students develop skills and learn how to alter writing based on their audience and purpose, while carefully making appropriate design decisions.

• Define plain language and its use in technical communication
• Apply principles of purpose, audience, and design to professional and technical documents
• Organize information in relation to purpose statements, concision, and clarity.
• Assess technical documents for editing, including content, format, style, and mechanics.
