Description du contenu de l'enseignement
Code scolarité : LG20CM22
This unit aims to expose students to the in-depth study of a literary work chosen from a wide range of texts in English (Irish literature, English literature, or postcolonial literature). Students have the choice of one seminar devoted to the analysis of a single work over the course of the semester. The historical frameworks to which the various literary works on offer belong are extremely varied, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period. Occasionally, certain works are studied in relation to specific film adaptations.
The seminars seek to develop the students’ skills in text analysis. The methodology of close reading, combined with historical and cultural contextualization, is central to the seminar. The students practice text analysis in writing and are encouraged to do oral presentations focusing on specific excerpts. Reading, writing and speaking skills are developed in relation to argumentative analysis.
Language of the seminars: English
Paper copies of the texts under scrutiny are obligatory in class.
LG20CM22 - Travaux dirigés de littérature britannique
Les œuvres doivent être lues avant le début des cours.
Programme de M. ROSS
The Granta Book of the Irish Short Story, ed. Anne Enright, Granta Publications, 2011.
Programme de Mme MOGHADDASSI
An Introduction to Middle English Literature. Texts will be handed out in class.
Further reading:
Geoffrey Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales : The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale, Jill Mann, ed. Penguin Classics, 2005 (ou autre édition)
Andre Crepin et HeleneTaurinya Dauby, Histoire de la litterature anglaise du Moyen Age, Nathan Universite, 1993 (chapitre 15 : Chaucer, p. 148-162)
Programme de Mme MISSET
Maria Edgeworth. Belinda. Oxford, Oxford U niversity Press, 2020.
Oeuvre obligatoire à tous les cours de littérature : Chris BALDICK, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms, Oxford University Press, 2004.
Programme de Mme DESNAIN
This course seeks to explore Virgina Woolf’s modernist novel Mrs Dalloway (1925). I will be using the 2009 Oxford World’s Classics edition (ISBN : 978-0199536009) in class. I highly recommend getting this exact one, as the novel is not divided into chapters so it will make it much easier to navigate if we work on the same edition. Students will be provided with a reading schedule on the first day of class, to help them get through the book in a timely manner while we work on context and methodology. Trigger warning : suicide
