This unit seeks to place literary works in their historical and cultural context, while exploring their artistic dimension. The tools, methods and practices of textual analysis will be further investigated through close reading and argumentative writing.
The courses on offer (TDs) give students an opportunity to further study American literature through the critical analysis of individual works. Some of the TDs also introduce students to the study of the relationships between literary and cinematic forms.
Students will develop their critical vocabulary and their close reading skills. Reading, writing and speaking skills are developed in relation to argumentative analysis.
Students will choose one of the courses on offer, but each has a limited number of places available.
Groupe 1 :
Mme Delage-Toriel
MAR 16-18, Patio 4305
Programme:
Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison [1977] - édition Vintage , 2004.
groupe 2 :
Mme Mantrant,
MER 8-10, Patio, 4307
Programme:
John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath (Penguin Modern Classics)
Students will undertake an in-depth study of Steinbeck’s Great Depression novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). They will first learn about the social and historical context in which the novel was written, before engaging in close reading and critical analysis.
Students are advised to watch John Ford’s 1940 adaptation of the novel.
This course will consist in a detailed study of Steinbeck's novel, but we will also discuss John Ford's 1940 adaptation.
Groupe 3:
M Lebold,
MER 14-16, 5ss01
Programme:
"You Want it Darker ?
Leonard Cohen, Songs of Leonard Cohen, 1967
I’m Your Man, 1988
Ten New Songs, 2001
groupe 4, JEU 16-18 (M. Eastman)
Patio, batiment 1, 1107
Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter, Penguin Classics.
