CM - English phonetics and phonology

The lecture course on English phonetics and phonology in the second semester builds upon the skills and knowledge acquired in the previous term. Its primary objectives are to enhance students' autonomy in improving their listening and speaking skills and to enhance their intelligibility by providing a comprehensive understanding of the prosodic system of English. The course progression starts with a focus on the lexical level, examining stress patterns in simple words, and analyzing salience in relation to phonological and morphological structures. Subsequently, the course explores compounds and phrases, examining rhythmic and semantic constraints in organizing utterances, with specific attention given to strong and weak forms in discourse. Finally, students will analyze intonation, covering tonality, tonicity, and tones as key components.
By the end of the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
• Demonstrate the ability to distinguish and produce strong and weak syllables in English words and phrases.
• Understand and apply the fundamental principles governing stress in various linguistic contexts, including simple words, compounds, phrases, and longer utterances.
• Communicate effectively with appropriate rhythm and intonation in spoken English.
• Utilize the weak and strong forms of common function words accurately.
• Identify and describe basic rhythmic processes in English.
• Explain and apply the fundamental principles of intonation in the context of longer utterances.
• Recognize and rectify common pronunciation errors related to prosody typically made by French speakers.
• Read and produce extensive phonemic transcriptions using IPA symbols.

TD - English phonetics and phonology

This TD class complements the lecture course on English phonetics and phonology, providing students with practical application of the key concepts covered. Through engaging activities, students practice transcription, revise important principles, and apply their knowledge through collaborative exercises and individual practice that solidifies students' understanding of English prosody and enhances their overall proficiency in the study of language sound systems.
