THEORIES OF MAN

Through the analysis of a series of cultural texts (including art portraits and images), the course will study, from the Middles Ages to the Modernity several concepts of Man that were valid in different cultural period and gave birth to the modern myth of "Man" as an autonomous, free, rational and active creature.
A detailed bibliohraphy will be given in the first course.



Le cours de culture générale permet de contextualiser les connaissances acquises dans les cours de la licence d’études anglophones. Il vise le décloisonnement des savoirs grâce à une perspective pluridisciplinaire qui permet de mieux comprendre les phénomènes historiques et culturels dans leur complexité et leurs interrelations. Il aborde aussi les grandes théories interprétatives qui permettent une réflexion approfondie sur les rapports entre culture et société. L'étudiant construit ainsi la culture générale indispensable tant à la poursuite de ses études qu'à sa future vie professionnelle.

General knowledge classes will enable students to contextualize the knowledge acquired throughout the licence d’études anglophones. They aim at reconnecting chunks of knowledge through a multidisciplinary approach and lead to a better understanding of complex and interrelated historical and cultural processes. General knowledge classes will also familiarize students with broad analytical theories to apprehend how culture and society are related. Students will build for themselves a body of general knowledge necessary for the successful completion of their graduate studies and professional life.

In the “age of revolutions” (1763-1804), the Americas and Europe experienced profound social and political transformation. The 1763 treaty of Paris redrew the map of the world and paved the way for American independence ultimately. The French Revolution of 1789 sent shockwaves throu gh Europe and reverberated to the Caribbean, where Haiti earned independence in 1804.

In this series of lectures, I will discuss the many causes and consequences of the American, French and Haitian revolutions and their mutual relations. How the historiography of the three events evolved will be my second major focus. Through the study of primary and secondary source documents, students will gain an in-depth understating of these fundamental events.
