Conférence - "Strengthening the cooperation in an uncertain international order. Japan and the European Union as strategic partners"

Emmanuel Droit, professeur d'histoire contemporaine à Sciences Po Strasbourg, anime une conférence internationale intitulée "Strengthening the cooperation in an uncertain international order. Japan and the European Union as strategic partners", mardi 14 et mercredi 15 janvier 2020, de 13 h 30 à 16 h.

Since the end of World War II, Japan and Europe have significantly contributed to the defense and the development of an international order based on shared universal fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law. This stable security environment has underpinned peace and prosperity in the world. At the same time, Japan and the European Union have developed a closer commercial cooperation since the early 1950s. Nevertheless, since the turn of the 21^st century, this post-Cold War order has been undermined by diverse threats such as international terrorism, violent extremism and more generally by unilateral attempts to change the balance of power by using protectionism, force or coercion.
Facing various common challenges such as climate change, the rise of protectionist trends and severe security threats, Japan and the EU must at the same time take on a greater responsibility than before while strengthening their collaboration in different fields. Despite geographical distance and cultural difference, they belong to the same community of fate and should find together solid responses to the crisis of multilateralism.
Despite different strategies sharing the same goals (peace, stability and prosperity ), a better and closer sustainable and comprehensive connectivity between Europe and Asia is one of these key challenges of the next decades.
