Description du contenu de l'enseignement

  • Laboratory : Overview of the equipment (glassware and apparatus) and the way to use it
  • Acids and bases : Arrhenius theory and its limitations, Bronsted-Lowry theory (conjugate pairs, amphiprotic species), acid and base dissociation constant, molecular and ionic equations, buffer solutions, titration types/curves, the equivalence, the half equivalence, acid-base indicators
  • Kinetics : definition of the concepts of average and instantaneous reaction rates, rate law, rate constant, reaction order, determination of the rate law by the method of initial rates, temperature dependence of reaction rates, Arrhenius equation
  • Organic Chemistry : name and representation of organic molecules , functional groups , inductive and mesomeric effect, famous reaction (nucleophilic substitution, elimination reactions)
  • Electrochemistry : Oxidation/Reduction reactions, half reaction method, gamma rule, standard electrode potential, voltaic cell
  • Experimental Chemistry : Operate in a laboratory, precision and utility of glassware and apparatus, preparation of solution, test for ions, titration, laboratory notebook and laboratory report guidelines

Compétences à acquérir

  • Name and understand different types of glassware and equipment, and their precision
  • Describe the behavior of chemicals as an acid and base in terms of Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry theories
  • Perform titration reaction and represent the equivalence on a graph
  • Determine the rate of a reaction to determine the reaction order and the rate
  • Predict the variable to modify reaction rates.
  • Draw and name organic compound following IUPAC nomenclature
  • Describe inter and intramolecular effect (polarity , inductive and mesomeric effects)
  • Recognize and compare different types of organic reactions
  • Describe an oxidation/reduction reaction using the half reaction method
  • Balance a chemical reaction
  • Predict the evolution of a chemical system
  • Use first and second order reaction rate
