Description du contenu de l'enseignement

This course presents some basic concepts of signal processing:
  • Timeseries and sampling
  • Fourier transform and frequency domain
  • Spectral resolution and aliasing effects
  • Numerical filtering
  • Frequency response of sensors
  • Correlation of two signals
  • Time-frequency analysis, spectrograms
Each of these concepts are illustrated with various geophysical datasets (gravimetry, seismic and seismology, electro-magnetic signals)

Compétences à acquérir

At the end of the course students will be able to:
  • Convert a signal (timeseries) from the time domain to the frequency domain and backward + understand the pro and cons of time/frequency representations
  • Interpret a frequency spectrum (amplitude and phase) and a spectrogram to extract the main frequencies of a signal and relate them to physical processes
  • Understand the major concepts and limitations induced by the chosen sampling rate, recording length and instrument when recording a geophysical signal
  • Filter a geophysical signal to highlight some of its particularities in the time domain
